Peak District National Park

Historical Houses | Climbing | Walking | Towns and Villages | Map of the park

The Peak District Britains most popular National Park, it provides the "lungs" of a great part of Northern England and its unspoilt rural landscape provides a refreshing contrast to the big industrial cities on each side.

It is not a wilderness area in the sense of National Parks in the USA, it has been cultivated and lived in for thousands of years and everything you see has man's hand in it, from the dry stone walls that delineate its sheep farms to the fragments of stone age tools that can still be picked up by knowledgable observers. It is very popular with walkers and we will be going out into the park on the afternoon of Saturday to walk in the area around the village of Edale, including the opportunity to walk up to Kinder Scout, the site of a famous event in the 1930s when working people from Manchester and Sheffield challenged the landlords who controlled the moorlands, for the right to roam on the hills.

If you would like to take part in this please tell Kirsty Christer . You will need to plan to stay in Sheffield on the Saturday night and make sure you bring some strong shoes and waterproof jacket. (British summer weather can be wonderful but you can never rely on it.)
